Technical Ceramics in Practical Applications

The Technical Ceramics Information Center regularly hosts a series of seminars titled “Technical Ceramics in Practical Applications” together with CeramTec and member organizations of the Ceramics Industry Association (Verband der Keramischen Industrie e.V.). This seminar series is aimed at teaching participants about the capabilities, applications and cost savings potential of technical ceramics.

Ceramic materials are now widely used in technical applications. As the understanding of how to handle modern high-performance materials grows, technical ceramics continue to offer new solutions to demanding problems. Ceramic components take advantage of the special characteristics of the materials used, thereby delivering convincing added value with regard to durability, safety and reliability.

Comparison of Ceramic Materials

Ceramic materials are significantly different from metals and polymers with regard to their mechanical and physical properties. But there is also a variety of different property combinations within ceramics as a materials group. Which ceramic is the right one depends on the application. This presentation provides an overview of the special properties and design criteria of ceramics compared to other materials as well as information about the unique properties of special types of ceramics. Application examples help explain the differences.

Industrial Product Design: Intelligent Solutions with Ceramics

Modern high-performance applications require custom-tailored technical solutions. Application-specific product design makes it possible to create intelligent solutions with technical ceramics. The choice of materials and production processes determines the design of the ceramic component. Here, design isn’t limited to the external shape or form. It has much more to do with the functionality and the properties of the ceramics (strength, hardness, wear resistance, thermal shock, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, surface structure and properties that affect the service life). Industrial product design also focuses on topics such as economy, safety and environmental compatibility. Examples show how the properties profiles of engineered ceramic components are adapted to the respective application properties.

Piezo-electric Materials and their Applications

Piezo-electric materials are used as transducers to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. This makes them ideal for use in a wide variety of sensor and actuator applications. Applications range from ultrasonic generation via power and acceleration sensors to use as positioning actuators. These diverse applications are also found in vehicle engineering – as knock sensors, ultrasonic sensors for parking, or as multilayer actuators to optimize consumption and exhaust in diesel engine management systems. Now there are even hermetically sealed actuators available for use in difficult conditions such as high humidity and with aggressive media.
