Awareness for Breast Cancer

Around 80 percent of breast cancer cases are discovered because the women themselves notice changes to their breasts. It is for exactly this reason that prevention and early detection are so important. Doctors recommend that women over 30 have a breast exam every year, and in Germany women between 50 and 69 are invited for a mammogram every two years. Both public and private health insurers cover the costs involved. Men are also affected in rare cases.

October being seen as breast cancer month goes back to the year 1985, when it was initiated by the American Cancer Society. In Germany, the German Cancer Society and German Cancer Aid support this month of awareness.
