Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg visits CeramTec in Plochingen

Winfried Kretschmann visits the Ceramic Experts

Plochingen, 2015-07-09

Impressed by the production facility where advanced ceramics are manufactured: Dr. Ulf-D. Zimmermann (CEO) explains to Winfried Kretschmann (Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg) ceramic ball heads for hip joint replacements.

The acting Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, wanted to meet one of the hidden champions of his state’s economy, so he visited the CeramTec Group headquarters in Plochingen. His visit centered on a tour of the advanced ceramics production facility for medical products.

CEO Dr. Ulf D. Zimmerman welcomed the guest of honor and introduced the Minister-President to the world of advanced ceramics: With revenues of EUR 475 million and 3,600 employees, the Ceramic Experts are the world leaders in a variety of application areas featuring technical ceramics.

One perfect example is the field of ball heads and cup inserts for hip joint replacements. BIOLOX® ceramic material developed by CeramTec has set the bar in this industry for 40 years. Today, nearly every 30 seconds a new patient receives a hip joint replacement featuring ceramic components from CeramTec, meaning that CeramTec plays a role in one out of every two hip joint operations performed worldwide.

“I am exceedingly impressed by CeramTec’s giant portfolio of products. I would also like to thank the company for its loyalty to the location. This is not only positive for the City of Plochingen, but also for the region and the entire country. I am glad that I had the opportunity to get to know this hidden champion of our local economy a bit better.”

Winfried Kretschmann was on site to see for himself the state-of-the-art production facility for ceramic components, which are used in medical engineering, mechanical and automotive engineering as well as electronics.

In the training workshop the Minister-President had a chance to chat with the Head of Vocational Technical Training and a female industrial mechanic trainee.

At the end of his visit, the Baden-Württemberg Minister-President also toured the CeramTec training workshop, where he had a chance to chat with trainees and their trainers. Commercial and technical vocational training is one of CeramTec’s top priorities. There are currently 41 trainees in Plochingen, and trainees make up 5.8% of the CeramTec workforce in Germany. These young people ensure that the company will have a steady supply of qualified successors well into the future.

The Minister-President ended his visit by signing the City of Plochingen’s Golden Book to record his visit to the town on the bend of the River Neckar.
