The “Tool-Maker of the Year 2014” award ceremony took place November 4th, during the 14th international “Tool and Die Making for the Future” colloquium, in the majestic setting of the Coronation Room in Aachen’s town hall. According to the event organizer, nearly 300 companies participated in this year’s competition and 11 were chosen as finalists. CeramTec took 12th place in the overall competition.

The CeramTec site in Lauf has had its own internal tool engineering department since 1921. The department presently makes devices and tools for use in various production processes to manufacture components made from technical ceramics such as dry pressing tools for very complex molds. 27 people and four trainees work in the tool engineering department alone.

The jury that selected CeramTec as a finalist in the category “Internal Tool-Maker” called the department’s early integration in upstream customer processes as one of its strengths. Other strengths include inquiry meetings with end customers and support in component development and design. The jury also praised the high degree of automation in the core technologies milling and EDM as well as CeramTec’s own patent system that systematically transfers knowledge throughout the company.
