This year’s winner of the Heinz Mittelmeier Research Prize is Dr. Ing. Jan-M. Brandt of the Concordia Joint Replacement Group from Winnipeg, Canada. He was honored for his work “Clinical Failure Analysis of Contemporary Ceramic on Ceramic Total Hip Replacements”.

The German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) presents the € 5,000 prize in collaboration with the CeramTec Group each year (known as the BIOLOX® Prize until 2003). The award is offered to young doctors, engineers and scientists age 40 and under for outstanding research and development work in the field of bioceramics and the problem of wear in joint replacements and in combination with clinical results of ceramic implants.

The winner is chosen by a four-person jury selected by the DGOOC: Prof. Dr. med. Christian Hendrich (Werneck), Prof. Dr. med. Heino Kienapel (Berlin), Dr. med. Karl-Heinz WIDMER (Schaffhausen) and Dr. Roman Preuß (CeramTec, Plochingen). The jurors are volunteers.

The research prize was awarded in October 2013 in Berlin during the jointly sponsored congress by the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC), the German Association for Trauma Surgery (DGU) and the Professional Association of Orthopaedists and Trauma Surgeons (BVOU).
