CeramTec Supports Charity Project in India

Indian media sources report that 15% of the population in India suffers from arthritis, which means every year nearly 400,000 people would have to undergo hip replacement surgery. In fact, only about 70,000 such surgeries are performed each year; over 300,000 people cannot afford the surgery and continue to live with pain and restricted mobility.

CeramTec and prosthesis manufacturer Link have teamed up with Professor K.H. Sancheti, owner of the renowned Sancheti Hospital in Pune and a leader in orthopedics in India, to create a charity project that will provide around 200 Indian patients with hip implants who would otherwise not be able to afford such an operation. CeramTec supplies the high-grade ceramic ball heads and cup inserts made of BIOLOX®delta materials for the project. Link provides modern prosthetic systems, and Professor Sancheti’s hospital performs the surgery. This collaboration makes it possible to use proven implant components that ensure longer durability in a system than systems which combine metal and synthetic materials.

One Sunday a month Sancheti Hospital organizes “diagnostic camps” that determine which cases are the most urgent, necessary and eligible for surgery.

“CeramTec has been in close contact with Professor K.H. Sancheti and Sancheti Hospital since the beginning of operations in India,” explains Matthias Grässel, project initiator and responsible for the Indian market. Prof. Sancheti, a leading authority in his field, recently received India’s second highest medal of honor for civilians for his community work and social involvement. He is the first doctor to receive this distinguished award. The project was presented at a press conference in late June and published in local newspapers in English, Hindi and Marathi (a local dialect).
