CeramTec StreetLights Brighten Wunsiedel

Energy-saving and maintenance-free – this is what the future of streetlights looks like. The city of Wunsiedel is cooperating with CeramTec to take steps in this direction with the launch of LED-based street lamps. On December 6th, CeramTec's Managing Director, Dr. Jürgen Huber, officially presented the three lights featuring CeramCool® ceramic heat-sink technology to the city of Wunsiedel. Together with Mayor Karl-Willi Beck, he ceremoniously flipped the switch on a wholly new technology.

CeramTec is not a lighting manufacturer; it is a leading company in the area of advanced ceramics, Dr. Huber clarified in his address. However, CeramTec helps lighting specialists develop new concepts. He also noted that fresh approaches take time and require “illuminating” proof of their functional capability, which the live test being conducted in Wunsiedel clearly provides. The product study for the LED-based streetlight is based on CeramCool® heat-sink technology, the ideal basis for constructing LED systems full of promise for the future of high-power LED systems, because Technical Ceramics are both electrically insulating and heat-conducting, Dr. Huber continued.

For Wunsiedel's mayor Karl-Willi Beck the street lamp is a shining example of the efficient use of energy, a goal the city of Wunsiedel and the entire region is striving to achieve. “This is a step toward presenting our city in the right light through the effective use of state-of-the-art technology,” said Beck. He thanked CeramTec for its support in introducing the latest technology in Wunsiedel, on behalf of the Wunsiedel municipal works and its Managing Director, Marco Krasser, who were also involved in the project.

The LED StreetLight's ceramic heat management features LED units that provide optimal operating temperatures and around 10,000 additional hours of maintenance-free operation. LEDs are extremely durable. But they are also very sensitive to heat. Reducing their operating temperature by 10°C adds four years to their service life. The CeramCool® heat-sink beats any cooling system made of aluminum hands down thanks to the directly applied, permanent metallic LED connection in terms of heat management, efficiency, lifetime and reliability. The diffuser selected for the Wunsiedel streetlights ensures uniform illumination of walking paths and streets without unnecessary scattered light. This not only increases the efficiency of the system, but also keeps light pollution to a minimum. On top of all this, the lighting effect is bright, coverage is even and the subjectively perceived brightness is quite good despite significantly reduced energy consumption (around 46W instead of the previous 180W).
