Success stories at CeramTec

“I simply enjoy accepting responsibility.”

Dr. Sabine Walter-Billau
Strategic Purchasing of Raw Materials

After completing my doctorate in Chemistry, I started working at CeramTec as a Development Engineer in mid-1989. I worked in the Development Department for around ten years and became the manager of Ceramography and Scanning Electron Microscopy here. While working in this area, I was involved in the development of a brown Al2O3 material for use in production in the Mechanical Systems Division – and I registered a patent for it. Hard work truly pays off.

“Being able to negotiate with customers independently is a positive confirmation of how much confidence the company places in me.”

Armed with this expertise and my experience with advanced ceramics, I moved to Technical Sales in the Multifunctional Ceramics Division. I assisted our Asian customers and was their first point of contact for technical inquiries. This was paired with regular and in some cases extended trips to Asia. In 2005 I spent seven months working as Director of Sales at CeramTec Suzhou. This was an important and exciting time for me because it helped me learn even more about the Chinese culture and prepared me for my later role in contact with our Asian customers. I still deal with people from different cultures all the time in my position today – and my experience comes in very handy.

“Collaborating with colleagues is exciting and motivating.”

I have worked in Strategic Purchasing in Plochingen since 2009, and am responsible for raw and auxiliary materials we procure from around the world. They form the basis for all of our products and Strategic Purchasing is responsible for securing our production. What's more, I also completed an additional training program as a Supplier Auditor here.

Beyond managing employees, my areas of responsibility also demanded close and effective collaboration with my colleagues, including those employed at our foreign subsidiaries. CeramTec’s flat organizational structure fosters this excellent collaboration and ensures a high degree of independence and responsibility – something very important to me.
