Ultrasonic material processing
The structure and the ultrasonics generation is identical to ultrasonic welding, except for the fact that a tool for machining the material is coupled to the end of the sonotrode and, in addition, a suspension acting as an abrasive is used. The tool which is excited to produce ultrasonic vibrations in feed direction makes the particles in the abrasive medium, which is fed in an aqueous suspension, likewise vibrate. During a fraction of the vibration cycle, the particles are non-positively locked to the work and tool. During these impacts, microscopic cutting is carried out on the work. This process allows machining of almost all materials from glass to hard metal. The advantage of this machining method is its great precision and the high-quality surface finish of the machined part.
