Gyroscopes
Gyroscopes play a central role in modern vehicle
stabilizing systems. They register any change in
direction of the vehicle and function as follows:
piezoelectric transducers are arranged at regular
intervals on the circumference of a cylinder. One
part of this transducer generates a standing vibration
of the cylinder wall with vibration loops and nodal
points. Another part of the transducer is fixed at
the nodal point and operates as a vibration sensor.
If the vehicle in which the sensor is fitted moves
uniformly, the vibration sensors do not receive any
signal. If the vehicle changes direction, the
standing vibration of the cylinder wall is shifted
by Coriolis force with the result that the vibration
loops move in the direction of the vibration sensors.
These sensors now register the magnitude of the
displacement of the standing vibration. This allows
very accurate measurement of even the smallest changes
in direction.
