Catalyst Carriers

Catalyst Carriers

In the Chemical Industry many intermediates and end products can only be produced by catalytic processes.

Within the heterogeneous catalysis, solid catalysts are applied for the conversion of gaseous or liquid reactants. In industrial scales, mainly fixed bed reactors are used for such reactions. Hereby the catalyst – this means the active substance – may be used alone or on a carrier.

Ceramic catalyst carriers form an important subgroup of support materials generally used. They are mainly applied for selective oxidations.

Ceramic catalyst supports can be differentiated:

  • dense support for shell type catalysts
  • porous supports for impregnated catalysts

They meet the necessary characteristics:

  • chemical inertness
  • mechanical stability
  • low surface
  • uniformity of the bulk material

Due to these characteristics, ceramic carriers are also relevant for e.g. catalysts in biochemistry for the immobilization of encymes or cells.

CeramTec supplies Ceramic Catalyst Supports based on Steatite and porous alumina. A variety of shapes and dimensions can be produced to meet special requirements.
