Piezoceramic valve control
Ever shorter valve operating times are required
in modern pneumatic and hydraulic applications.
The piezoceramic multilayer actuator with forces
in the kN range and regulating distances of up to
50 µm represents an interesting solution. Due to
the high energy densities which can be achieved,
the required product of deflection and force can be
achieved with a comparatively small actuator
volume. At less than 1 ms, the response times
attainable are way below those for electromagnetic
drives.
One possible application, for example, is the intelligent direct injection of gasoline or diesel in car engines. Due to the high dynamics of the actuator, an intelligent injection cycle with pre-injection and analog-controlled main injection volume corresponding to the actual fuel requirement on the basis of the current engine operating map might in future be able to replace the present electro-magnetic injection systems.
