Precise positioning
Optical fiber adjustment
Optical fibers as communication medium are only a
few µm thick. If two optical waveguides have to be
connected to each other when such cable systems are
being laid, they must be positioned accurately in
relation to each other to within a fraction of a µm.
Monolithic multilayer actuators are ideally suited
to this task because when electrically activated
they produce a length change proportional to the
control voltage, which can be regulated accurately
to within 0.1µm.

Precision adjusting facilities
Micro-adjusting elements are used wherever precise positioning in one or several directions is necessary, as for example in interferometry, laser applications or in wafer technology. Depending on the design, up to three piezoelectric, pre-stressed multilayer actuators are installed into a no-play mechanical position transmission unit. One multilayer actuator is used for each spatial direction, causing a relative movement of the system which corresponds to its expansion plus the position transmission.
