Advanced ceramics — Technical ceramics materials by CeramTec

Properties of high-performance ceramics.

With more than a century of experience in development and production to draw on, CeramTec has established itself as one of the world's top companies in the field of advanced ceramics. The current portfolio comprises well over 10,000 different products, electronic and mechanical components, and a wide variety of ceramic materials.

The platform for all these developments are advanced ceramics, also referred to as technical ceramics, engineering ceramics or industrial ceramics. These terms cover a variety of different, and in part highly-specialized, ceramic materials with unique mechanical, electrical, thermal and biochemical properties and property combinations. Ceramic materials, which possess special electric or piezoelectric properties, are also referred to as functional ceramics.

High performance oxide ceramic supplied by CeramTec is, for example, aluminum oxide (Al2O3), zirconium oxide (ZrO2), aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5), silicate ceramic or piezoceramic. High performance non-oxide ceramic is also available, such as silicon carbide (SiSiC or SSiC), silicon nitride (Si3N4) or aluminum nitride (AlN), among others. In addition, composite materials as metal matrix composites (MMC) or ceramic matrix composites (CMC) are offered.

Technical ceramics – our fields of application

The applications for advanced ceramics from CeramTec are primarily found in the automotive industry, electronics, medical technology and in general industry.

Each application with ceramic components places individual demands on the capabilities of the materials. Therefore, the successful deployment of products depends above all on selecting the correct materials and fine-tuning them. This is the domain of the ceramic experts of CeramTec, who know the optimal advanced ceramics material for each requirement profile, and hence the optimal solution to the problem.

Information on our ceramic materials

Further information on the main materials we use can be found on the following pages, where there is also an overview of our extensive product portfolio and the different business divisions of CeramTec.

We also recommend the article on ceramic engineering at the english Wikipedia and a visit of the website of the german Ceramic Industry Association, where you can find further technical information and a useful breviary technical ceramics handbook.

“Technical Ceramics” in German from “The Library of Technology” series availableWe are also offering a free copy of “Technical Ceramics” in German from “The Library of Technology” series (German book and series title: Technische Keramik; Die Bibliothek der Technik) published by moderne industrie. CeramTec is a partner to the book and provides information, images and suggestions on this topic. The chapters cover a number of subjects including a materials overview, the manufacturing process, design and technical ceramics in application, and offer detailed insight into the world of advanced ceramics. Order your copy from or in bookstores: ISBN 978-3-937889-97-9.
