Production

How is BIOLOX®forte manufactured?

The production of ceramic components is a long, complex and multi-stage process. Our many years of experience together with our high standard of quality control ensure that what we produce is of the highest quality. The first production process is the preparation of the ceramic powder. Once all the constituent powders have been weighed, they are mixed and then pressed under high pressure to form pressed powder cylinders.

Alumina powder and alumina pressed cylinder. The first
production steps.

These cylinders are then shaped using numerically controlled state-of-the-art machines to form semi-finished components.

Ball head production. State-of-the-art numerically controlled
machines shape the ball heads.

These components are then sintered in a three-stage sintering process. The second sintering process is Hot Isostatic Pressing, which requires a temperature in excess of 1400 °C and a pressure of more than 1000 Bars.

After sintering, the components are ground and polished in order to produce the finest possible surface finish. This is necessary to obtain a very low wear rate. The parts are then laser marked so that they can be identified throughout their lifetime. Each single part carries a unique number, which permits the entire production history for each specific part to be traced back, if needed. They are then subject to highly accurate dimensional controls using co-ordinate measuring machines to ensure perfect dimensional accuracy.

Measurement control. The diameter and sphericity are
controlled to guarantee clearance and to ensure a very low
wear rate.

After final inspection, the parts are cleaned and packed. During the entire production process each part has to successfully pass through a large number of inspection checkpoints.

The entire production process is described in the video entitled “State of the Art Ceramics Manufacturing”. Click here to order a free copy here.
