The first production Steps.
Bauxite is a naturally-occurring mineral, which is the starting material for the extraction of aluminum oxide ceramics. The extraction process is a very complicated one, requiring many separate stages before pure aluminium oxide is obtained. Because of the complexity of the extraction process high purity aluminum oxide is only used for products which must satisfy the highest performance requirements. This is particularly the case for bioceramics, since they must have not only high wear resistance and low specific gravity, but also excellent biocompatibility and surface finish.
