Modular ceramic hip joints
In the practice of modern hip replacement the principle of hip system modularity is well-established and clinically-proven. Modularity allows the acetabular shell to be combined according to the needs of the patient with an acetabular cup insert made of polyethylene, highly crossed-linked polyethylene, metal or ceramic.
BIOLOX®forte ball heads and acetabular cup inserts are available for most modular hip systems and are successful in clinical use. BIOLOX®forte cup inserts are inserted into the acetabular shell by the surgeon and are attached using either the CeraLock® design.
The use of ceramic ball heads and cup inserts offers the best possible solution for active patients as well as for those with metal allergy. The proper choice by the surgeon of the individual components of a modular hip system can significantly improve the range of motion and stability of the hip joint, for example by the use of larger ball heads.
The versatility and interchangeability provided by the BIOLOX® family of products (see illustration) offer the orthopaedic companies in collaboration with CeramTec the possibility of supplying implants to their customers having a greater range of options.

BIOLOX®forte can be combined with all the products in
the BIOLOX® family of products as well as with polyethylene and
highly cross-linked polyethylene.
