Mechanical Properties
BIOLOX®delta is composed of approximately 75% aluminum oxide, which provides the basic hardness and wear resistance and approximately 25% zirconia, which together with other additives provides the improved mechanical properties. Compared with pure aluminium oxide ceramic BIOLOX®delta offers higher mechanical properties including higher fracture toughness. As a result, BIOLOX®delta offers the potential to create new applications such as BIOLOX®OPTION and knee replacement prostheses.
The properties of BIOLOX®delta which are most outstanding are its very high strength and toughness. These properties are achieved, among other things, as a result of the high density of the material and the very small grain size of the alumina matrix.
