Design Concept
A step forward in Orthopaedics
BIOLOX®delta is a high performance ceramic biocomposite material with the potential to be used in applications which were not previously possible using ceramics. It combines the excellent material properties of alumina ceramics in terms of chemical and hydrothermal stability with extremely low wear, superior mechanical strength and improved fracture toughness.
The microstructure of BIOLOX®delta:
1 Platelet
2 Alumina grain
3 Y-TZP particles

Comparison of 4-pt bending strength of alumina, zirconia
and BIOLOX®delta after autoclaving.
The chart shows that many hours of autoclaving (exposure to high temperature and pressure) do not have a detrimental effect on BIOLOX®delta.
BIOLOX®delta is a material intended for special medical applications requiring the highest performance. In these applications it provides improved versatility and reliability.
BIOLOX®delta – The Latest Development
For applications which are not possible with BIOLOX®forte

BIOLOX®delta – is the newest member of the BIOLOX® family of materials. It is an alumina matrix composite, which makes use of the following principles:
- Transformation toughening resulting from the addition of small homogeneously dispersed zirconia particles in the alumina matrix
- Platelet reinforcement resulting from the formation of larger oxide crystals.
- Composite hardening resulting from the addition of chromium oxide
