Scratch Resistance

Surface of a metal ball head

Surface of a BIOLOX®forte ball head

BIOLOX®forte components have a hardness of approximately 2,000 HV (Vickers Hardness) and so with the exception of diamond constitute the hardest materials known to man. Therefore BIOLOX®forte components, if they were scratched during implantation, would remain undamaged, since BIOLOX®forte ceramic is roughly three times harder than metal. In contrast, if a metal surface is scratched, both a depression and a protrusion are formed as in a furrow in a field. These create increased wear in articulation with polyethylene and in and promote the clinical use of ceramic wear couples with metal in a metal-on-metal wear couple. Further information on the outstanding properties of BIOLOX® wear couples can be obtained by clicking here.
