Enhancing Performance and Service Life in the Automotive Industry

Ceramic Seal Rings, Bearings and Sealing Technology in Automotive Engineering

In engine design or exhaust systems, in liquid or gas circuits – automotive industry demands on seal rings, bearings and sealing technology are especially high. Technical ceramics ensure wear resistance, temperature resistance and stability in these aggressive environments.

CeramTec uses ceramic materials such as silicon nitride, zirconium oxide and alumina in a variety of ways in seal ring, bearing and sealing technology for automotive and vehicle engineering components. Uses range from valves and sensor bodies to seal rings, seals and rollers for fuel pumps, water pumps or roller bearings all the way to friction bearings and shafts.

It goes without saying that CeramTec is certified according to ISO TS 16949 and well-equipped to handle the toughest demands on ceramic materials in vehicle engineering and automotive manufacturing.

Cyrol® – Bearing Rollers made from Silicon Nitride

CeramTec developed a silicon nitride material and production method to mass produce ceramic bearing rollers at very affordable costs. Cyrol bearing rollers open up a broad spectrum of applications for ceramic bearings and hybrid roller bearings. They meet the technical requirements for roller bearings according to the ASTM F2730/F2730M Class I Standard for salable prices.

Pumps and Pump Casing Applications

Ceramic sealing technology in automotive engineering

Switching to technical ceramics as the material used for seal rings and bearings in automotive and vehicle engineering brings numerous advantages. Excellent wear resistance, dimensional stability and a reduction in moving mass increase performance while simultaneously decreasing noise emission levels and extending the service life of all types of pumps in vehicles – for instance in coolant pumps, electronic fuel pumps or high-pressure pumps for diesel engines.

Technical ceramics also prove highly effective in pump casings and enclosures for magnetic clutch pumps without shaft seals. For some applications and under certain threshold constraints only leak-proof pumps such as magnetic clutch pumps that transmit drive power to the pump shaft without any contact can be employed.

Since the enclosure separates the outer and inner magnet assemblies, it must be constructed using a non-magnetic material such as plastic, stainless steel or ceramics. However, in many cases plastic lacks the necessary mechanical strength; the ceramic material silicon carbide easily outperforms both plastic and even stainless steel in terms of hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and long service life.

Exhaust Flap Applications

Zirconium oxide has proven itself to be the ideal material for exhaust valves and flaps. Its excellent surface properties, high strength, low Young’s modulus and high abrasion resistance are paired with a thermal expansion coefficient comparable to steel, making it an ideal material for composite steel bearings working at high temperatures.

Today, bearing bushes for exhaust flaps work without displaying any signs of wear at operating temperatures reaching 500 °C, i.e. in environments where conventional materials fail or demonstrate a significantly shorter service life. The outstanding thermal properties of zirconium oxide ceramic material combined with CeramTec’s expertise in precision components result in the perfect solution for exhaust flap bearings.
