BIOLOX®OPTION System
BIOLOX®OPTION System for revision and primary surgery
The BIOLOX®OPTION System is intended to be used either for cup revision or ball head exchange, the latter when a ceramic head is to be inserted on an already implanted prosthesis stem.
Furthermore using the system neck length corrections can be made in primary hip replacement (for example, with 28 mm, 32 mm, 36mm, 40 mm or 44 mm ceramic ball head a XL neck length can be used).
Numerous insertion possibilities
The BIOLOX®OPTION System System offers the surgeon the choice of inserting the same wear couple as before or of optimising the wear couple and thereby satisfying the patients’ needs in the best possible way.
Product Range
The BIOLOX®OPTION System consists of:
- Ball heads made of wear resistant, high performance BIOLOX®delta ceramic in five diameters: 28 mm, 32 mm, 36mm, 40 mm and 44 mm.
- Titanium sleeves made of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy in four neck lengths: S, M, L, XL.
The BIOLOX®OPTION titanium sleeves are available for the 12/14 stem taper, since this is the most frequently used taper geometry for ceramic ball heads. Titanium sleeves for the 10/12 stem taper with 6° taper angle are in preparation.

The BIOLOX®OPTION System – each ceramic ball head can
be combined with each titanium sleeve in order to provide a
wider range of options.
Material
BIOLOX®OPTION ball heads are made of BIOLOX®delta, CeramTec’s specially-designed Alumina Matrix Composite ceramic. It is bioinert, biocompatible, wear resistant and as a result helps to avoid allergic reactions.

Further sleeve types will be available in the future.
Combination with prosthetic components
In the pre-operative planning process the compatibility of the taper on the already implanted stem with the taper on the sleeve must be verified.
BIOLOX®OPTION ball heads made of BIOLOX®delta can be combined with inserts made of BIOLOX®forte, BIOLOX®delta, polyethylene or highly crossed-linked polyethylene as wear partner.
If the hip system to be implanted consists of various components from different orthopaedic companies, then these companies should be contacted for their technical approval.
To ensure the success of the BIOLOX®OPTION System, in addition to the general information provided here, the brochure BIOLOX®OPTION, the instructions for use provided by CeramTec and by the orthopaedic company should be followed.
